EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a powerful moment in history - the 14th Sikhs waiting for an attack at the Delhi Camp of Exercise in 1886. The image, taken by an unknown photographer from the 19th century, is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The Camp of Exercise held near Delhi and Umballa during 1885-1886 was a significant event, marking the largest gathering of troops in peacetime India up to that date. With four divisions consisting of fourteen cavalry and thirty-six infantry regiments - both British and Indian - this exercise involved a staggering number of individuals: 37,000 troops and 25,000 followers. For one month, these brave soldiers trained tirelessly before culminating their efforts with a review. In this particular moment captured on film, we see them awaiting an impending attack. Their stoic expressions reveal their readiness for battle as they stand armed with Snider rifles. This photograph not only serves as a testament to the dedication and discipline exhibited by these soldiers but also offers us a glimpse into military training practices of that era. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served their country during times of peace while preparing for potential conflicts. Now preserved within Bridgeman Images' collection on Fine Art Finder, this print continues to honor the bravery and commitment displayed by these remarkable men over a century ago.
