A column of the French Foreign Legion advancing towards Tananarive, Madagascar, 1895
A column of the French Foreign Legion advancing towards Tananarive, Madagascar, 1895. France invaded Madagascar in 1883 in what became known as the first Franco-Hova War (Hova being the name of the islands Merina aristocrats), seeking to restore property that had been confiscated from French residents. Prior to the French intervention Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty, but after the war, increasing French interference meant another war broke out in 1895. By the end of the Second Franco-Hova War in 1896 France ruled the island as a protectorate, the monarchy had been abolished and the royal family exiled to Algeria. French postcard

EDITORS COMMENTS
A historic moment captured: A column of the French Foreign Legion marches forward with determination towards Tananarive, Madagascar in 1895. This powerful print depicts a significant chapter in history - the first Franco-Hova War. France's invasion of Madagascar in 1883 aimed to reclaim confiscated property from French residents on the island. Prior to this intervention, Madagascar had been an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty. However, as French interference increased, tensions escalated leading to another war in 1895. The Second Franco-Hova War concluded in 1896 with France establishing its rule over Madagascar as a protectorate. Tragically, this resulted in the abolition of the monarchy and forced exile for the royal family to Algeria. In this image, we witness brave soldiers of the French Foreign Legion marching forward with their rifles and backpacks amidst a backdrop of colonialism and warfare. Their military uniforms symbolize their allegiance to France as they navigate through challenging terrain towards their objective. This print not only captures a pivotal moment but also serves as a reminder of how historical events shape nations and impact lives. It invites us to reflect upon themes such as power dynamics, conquests, and cultural exchange that defined this era.
