English theatricals at Paris - the Salle Ventador, 1844. Creator: Unknown
English theatricals at Paris - the Salle Ventador, 1844. A production of Shakespeares Othello on the French stage. The Salle itself is perhaps the most beautiful in the world. The rich gilding upon a white ground, relieved by the deep crimson velvet, which gives the only colour used in the theatre, places the splendid audience in the richest possible framework, and the boxes receding as they grow higher, and free from all division, so as to show every person as in the section of an amphitheatre...A foreign audience in the mass are only judges of the right and wrong, the interest for the good and against the bad characters of a drama. The sufferings therefore which prompt the stern justice of Othello, the conscience which is the indecision of Hamlet, are beyond their appreciation. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing moment in English theatrical history - the production of Shakespeare's Othello on the French stage at the Salle Ventadour in 1844. The Salle Ventadour itself is hailed as one of the most exquisite theaters in the world, and this image showcases its breathtaking beauty. The intricate gilding against a pristine white backdrop, adorned with deep crimson velvet, creates an opulent setting that envelops the splendid audience like a magnificent frame. The boxes, ascending higher without any partitions, resemble an amphitheater section and offer unobstructed views of every person present. However, it is important to note that this foreign audience may not fully grasp the nuances and complexities of Shakespearean tragedies. While they can judge right from wrong and form opinions about good and bad characters within a drama, they may struggle to comprehend the profound sufferings that drive Othello's stern justice or Hamlet's indecisive conscience. Originally featured in "Illustrated London News" in 1844, this black-and-white engraving transports us back to a bygone era when theater was at its zenith. It serves as a testament to both British cultural influence abroad and William Shakespeare's enduring legacy across borders. This remarkable photograph print by Unknown offers us a glimpse into an enchanting moment where artistry transcends language barriers and captivates audiences from different corners of the world.
