Nurses hostel JLP01_08_074883
Restell Close, Greenwich,
Greater London. Two women sitting, reading and writing, in the bedroom of a Sectra block of residential nurses flats on Restell Close.
This residential block for nurses was one of three 10-storey, H-shaped blocks, built by Laings Construction Company for the South-East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board, using the Sectra system. The flats were built on a high point just off Vanbrugh Hill with views over Greenwich, Deptford and the River Thames, providing self-contained flats of three and four rooms for nurses who worked at Greenwich Hospital. The blocks were named Jenner House, Lister House and Norfolk House. In 2007, two of the blocks were demolished and Norfolk House was reclad and subsequently renamed Leamington Court

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse into the everyday lives of two women residing in the Nurses Hostel on Restell Close, Greenwich. The image showcases them engrossed in their activities, one reading and the other writing, within the cozy confines of their bedroom. The residential block they inhabit is part of a trio of impressive 10-storey H-shaped buildings known as Jenner House, Lister House, and Norfolk House. Constructed by Laings Construction Company using the innovative Sectra system, these flats were specifically designed for nurses working at Greenwich Hospital. Positioned on an elevated spot just off Vanbrugh Hill, these self-contained accommodations offer stunning panoramic views overlooking Greenwich, Deptford, and even glimpses of the majestic River Thames. The photograph not only provides insight into domestic life during the 1960s but also offers a glimpse into fashion and interior design trends of that era. The furniture exudes charm with its unique patterns and motifs that add character to this otherwise functional space. Although time has brought changes to this landscape since then – with two blocks being demolished in 2007 while Norfolk House underwent recladding and was renamed Leamington Court – this image serves as a testament to an important chapter in nursing history. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print allows us to appreciate both the architectural significance of these nurse flats and the daily routines that unfolded behind closed doors all those years ago.
